"RTW trip tickets versus stand-alone flights" is as hotly debated as the 1st Century's "chicken or the egg" question. For us, RTW tickets worked out to be much cheaper, but we had to forgo some of the flexibility that comes with purchasing flights as you go. We purchased "main flights" and will travel throughout SE Asia and South America on our own so that we don't give up all of our flexibility.

AirTreks allows you to choose your destinations without all of the pesky rules that typical round-the-world tickets require. There's no limit on miles, you can switch directions, etc. They also include post-departure insurance for free so you have basic medical, dental and travel-related insurance while you're traveling.

Medical insurance while you're travelling isn't cheap, but we are conservative and believe it's a worthwhile investment...especially considering some of the crazy things we do while travelling. We purchased a policy from World Nomads, a company with a good reputation and very competitive prices. This insurance will be in addition to the free post-departure insurance we received from AirTreks.

Jan will be carrying Eagle Creek's Switchback 25 Travel Pack. It's a 55-liter wheeled upright bag with a full-suspension backpack carry option and detachable 28-liter daypack. Yemi will be carrying a similar bag by REI.
We've been travelling with these bags for the last year and love the size and capabilities. We enjoy having a rolling bag with the option of converting it to a backpack on rough terrain. The daypacks are also padded and extremely comfortable on long walks.
Ideally, we would have liked to have carry-on size luggage, but we couldn't justify the additional expense given that we have two bags that work fine.
