The 3 Stages of Being Around Monkeys

wild monkey in Asia
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
So far on our SE Asia journey, monkeys have been practically as common as ants in the US... every time we round a corner on our motorbike, we see dozens of monkeys.  This was the case in both Ubud, Bali, Indonesia and now in Langkawi, Malaysia.

We both found ourselves going through three phases while living around monkeys:

Stage 1
The first few days you are around monkeys they are fascinating.  You take a lot of pictures and find the things they do adorable and intriguing.  You go out of your way to purchase bananas so you can feed the monkeys.

We're clearly in "Stage 1" in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.  Go ahead with the "monkey on your back" jokes...
Stage 2
The next few days you ignore them.  Seeing them around loses excitement.  You know the drill of zipping everything away in a backpack and taking your hands out of your pockets so they don't try to steal your belongings.

Stage 3
After the first week, they are downright annoying!  You can't sip water in their vicinity else your water bottle will be snatched.  You can't relax at the beach because you hear them rustling in the trees behind you, watching your every move.  You can't leave your car window open because they will find a way to get inside.  You appreciate their stealth survival skills, but you would rather them scout out unsuspecting people other than yourself.
"Phase 3" - Yemi's relaxing beach time being interupted by the monkeys rustling the trees behind him

"Phase 3" - Jan deciding that she's more comfortable sitting sideways on the beach to watch for monkeys taking our things

Monkeys.  We love them.. in small doses. :)

  2. So if I had a million dollars, you'd rather I not buy you a monKEY. (Trying for a "Bare Naked Ladies" reference.)

And I can totally see the three phases. Years back, some friends were doing that Iowa bicycle thing (RAGBRAI) when Tom Arnold started crashing their camp because they had a gourmet chef with them. They got to phase 3 quick.
